NEW DELHI: The central government has banned the import, breeding and sale of 'aggressive' dog breeds like Rottweilers, Pitbulls, Terriers, Wolf Dogs, Mastiffs, etc. The ban also applies to their mixed and cross-breeds. The action is based on the recommendations of the expert committee and the animal welfare committee set up on the directives of the Delhi High Court.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has sent a letter to the states asking them to stop local bodies from issuing sales licenses to the banned breeds. For those who currently own these breeds, the dogs should be sterilized to prevent further breeding. The central government said that the aim is to prevent the loss of human life by such dangerous dogs.

Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boesboel, Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Rottweiler, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Dogs, Canario, Akbash, Moscow Guard, Cane Corso, Bandog.
